Road Scholar, (division of Elderhostel) develops programs for individuals in their 50’s – 80’s. Each trip has a docent/instructor who is with you every minute of the trip. The programs are rated by activity level. The writer took a beautiful bus trip last year to Bryce, Zion and Grand Canyons with 40 retired school teachers, professors, a lawyer, a Washington lobbyist, a mother/daughter duo and others. Most had been on Road Scholar trips before and one person was on their 14th trip! Our guide was a professor from a university in Arizona – who had written a geology textbook.
The accommodations were very good to excellent. The restaurants were excellent. Two dinners were very high end. If you don’t want to just travel, there are golf, tennis, hiking, birding, bicycling, painting, photography, etc. packages. If you are a single, you can stay with another single which lowers your cost. The latest catalogue is 174 pages and that is only for North America! No airports, no hauling of luggage, no responsibility!
